In May of 1942, as part of the construction of the now world-famous Alaska Highway, a US Corp of Engineers Pontoon Barge carrying seventeen soldiers and equipment across Charlie Lake sank, taking the lives of twelve soldiers. In 2008, a monument was erected in memory of the soldiers that lost their lives that day.
